Initially I carried out a Gas Safety Checks on this newly purchased house before the new owner moved in. I found many faults with the boiler and .. it was more than two faults!
This video was recorded before the boiler was repaired.
There was a water leak and considerable corrosion near the condensate trap of this Potterton Suprima 50 HE boiler. Before I taken the secondary heat exchanger out, I suspected its leaking from condensate trap, condensate sump or the flow and return o rings at the clip joints. But once I taken the secondary heat exchanger it is sure that the corrosive flue gas with acidic water moist has eroded the heat exchanger hood between the Gaiter and make about 5mm in diameter hole. Water and POC are basically coming out of this hole. ( Before I taken this apart the boiler is classified NCS but now after shedding light on the matter.. its ID) The worst it yet to come!
Try to order the part from the manufacture since no merchant is keeping this as a spare - its not available! The don't know when they can manufacture and deliver!. This is where they bought the house so recently and the home owner waned to avoid spending money for a new boiler at all costs..
Finally I managed to find a reconditioned part from Adlink .. they said no Gurantee at all... take or leave... I took it. Guess what there was a sign of little corrosion at the same place.. but it was good enough to use it. All the seals I ordered from the manufacture including the clip joints and fitted it back and tested.. signed and dated.
I am writing this after about a year.. and since then every single Potterton Suprima HE boiler has the same sign of this POC leak.. I had to condemn them. I explained the danger and ID them. Sometimes people asking am I serious to turn their APPARANTLY GOOD BOILER .. off . Hey Safety is paramount in this CH4 and CO business.
